Growing the superfood of the future: Green Onyx – vertical farming revolutionises the way we produce food

Vertical farming presents itself as a revolutionary frontier in the food landscape, offering an innovative solution for growing fresh, nutritious and sustainable food independently of adverse weather conditions and using minimal space.

Overcoming the limits of traditional agriculture

Today’s industrial food production often fails to meet essential nutritional requirements. Fruits and vegetables, while looking inviting, may be lacking in vitamins and minerals or fail to ripen fully. Vertical farming, based on a controlled, scientific approach, enables the cultivation of higher quality food by monitoring and optimising each stage of the growing process.

What are the Advantages of Vertical Farming?

  • Optimal control of growing conditions: Thanks to advanced sensor systems, vertical farming automatically regulates factors such as light, temperature, moisture and nutrients, ensuring an ideal environment for each specific crop. This results in more lush, nutritious and tasty crops.
  • Space maximisation: Vertical farms make vertical use of space, allowing a large amount of food to be grown in small areas. This makes them ideal for urban settings or areas with limited agricultural land.
  • Local production and reduced environmental impact: Growing food locally drastically reduces emissions from transport, contributing to a lower environmental impact. In addition, vertical farming optimises the use of water and resources, minimising waste.
  • Freshness and quality guaranteed: produce harvested on vertical farms is consumed fresh, keeping its nutritional properties and flavour intact. This means being able to enjoy wholesome, healthy food at zero kilometres.
  • Flexibility and adaptability: Vertical farming adapts to different climatic conditions and can be used in contexts with extreme climates or periods of drought, guaranteeing stable and safe production throughout the year.

Green Onyx: an example of excellence in vertical farming

Innovative cutting-edge technology

GreenOnyx an agro-technology company founded in 2013 with the aim of revolutionising the way fresh food is produced, distributed and consumed, has developed a patented growing platform that mimics natural growing conditions, ensuring an optimal environment for growing fresh and nutritious vegetables throughout the year.

This technology is based on:

  • Advanced sensors: Automatically monitor and adjust factors such as light, temperature, humidity and nutrients for each specific crop.
  • Artificial intelligence: Optimises growing conditions and predicts future plant needs, ensuring lusher, tastier crops.

Beyond terrestrial boundaries: vertical farming in space

Vertical farming is not limited to Earth. Its applications could also extend to space, ensuring the production of fresh food for astronauts during long-duration space missions.

#GreenOnyx unveiled its flagship product, Wanna Greens®, fresh Wolffia plants, making history as the first water lentil plant intentionally sent into space in ready-to-eat form, launched aboard SpaceX to the International Space Station (ISS).

This historic milestone was achieved on 9 November 2023, as part of the CRS-29 resupply mission.

The launch included a proprietary package of fresh Wanna Greens® for convenient consumption by astronauts and a NASA-approved miniature water lentil growing module developed by GreenOnyx.

Go Green, stay tuned!
